Tonalist landscape painting

Dipping my toes into Tonalism

Landscape painting, oil on canvas, 240mm x 190mm

I’ve been looking at a lot of tonalist painters recently, thank you Instagram. I thought I’d start working on my abilities in that area. This is the first sort of sketch.

Certainly, I have a long way to go, but I think I dimly understand the sort of paint application techniques necessary to do this well – but basically just the basics.

The oil paint seems to lend itself well to such adventures, but I think the hog’s bristle brushes I tend towards are a bit detrimental to the task. While I like the structure of those brushes and have a good feel for precision of paint application, the blending-heavy process seems to require a softer touch.

It’s off to the art store to get some brushes with softer bristles.
